JUICES VS. SMOOTHIES! WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Friend! I am full of joy as I type this! I'm soooo excited!!!!!

You are welcome once again to my space, but because you are here, it's OUR space

PS: it's so nice to have you here AGAIN!๐Ÿ˜„

I am almost sure that you have been hearing about the comparison between smoothies and juices - which is healthier?; which is more filling?; which tastes better?, and so on.

Let me be the one to tell you that they are both healthy and in some cases one is more highly  recommended than the other.

Alright dear one, let's take it step by step.

For smoothies, a blender is used to grind the fruits and veggies together. The blender mixes the fiber and the juice together. No separation is done at any point. Say you blend frozen berries, banana, pineapples, yoghurt, the blend will contain the fiber of  each fruit. It will also contain the juice within the fiber.

The consistency you get in your glass is thick, smooth and very very yummy๐Ÿ˜‹

For juices, a juicer is used. This process is more of an extraction. A juicer extracts the juice within the fiber of the fruits and veggies you juice. When you stuff your juicer with Cucumber, Ginger, Kale, Lettuce, Apples, the juicer only extracts the juice within the fibers and brings out the dried fiber through a chute and brings out the juice through a different chute. So when you look in your glass, you see a light consistency. In most cases, as light as water.

Should I take a break here or are you good ?

Oh, you're good. That's what I thought!๐Ÿ˜Ž

I know you are asking yourself "Errr, why do I lose the fiber when I juice? I may just have to stick to smoothies."

Okay, okay, good point. Permit me to give you some notes on fiber. You may just see things differently, who knows๐Ÿ˜œ

  • Fiber is an indigestible material found in plants
  • Fiber in itself does not contain nutrients
  • Fiber cannot feed you because it can't gain access into the intestinal wall. It is the juice within the fiber that feeds your cells
  • Fiber aids bowel movement.
  • Fiber feeds the microbes in the gut and attaches itself to cholesterol so it does not get into your bloodstream, hence, reducing fat levels
  • Fiber is AMAZING for weight loss
  • Fiber keeps you fuller for longer
  • Juice is NOT totally void of fiber

Yes you were right. Fiber is very important.

When you are eating a carrot or an apple, see your mouth as the blender and your stomach as the juicer. Here's how it works.
Your teeth grind the veggies like blender blades do. When the mix gets into your stomach, not everything gets into your cells or bloodstream. Digestion takes place and only food in juice form  can enter your cells - the journey ends there for fiber.
This process causes a delay and compromise in absorption of nutrients. I say compromise because, during digestion , you may use some energy before your cells receive any nutrients. That's why when you drink a smoothie, you don't feel so energetic.

If you drink juice, the absorption of nutrients is rapid. Can you guess why?
Exactly!, because it's already in the form of juice so there are no obstructions. It gets into cells way faster than a blend would.
It's bio-available. It saves your body energy and you feel that burst of energy almost immediately - 10 - 15 minutes tops.
I'm glad you are getting this!

Blends are more  Macronutrients-dense(Carbohydrates, Proteins and Fats)
Juices are more Micronutrients-dense (vitamins and minerals)

Juicing is great for a quick burst of energy, for detoxification, for healing and recovery.

PS: whispers by now you can tell that I am a bigger fan of juices than I am of blends. Shhh.

I really hope you enjoyed this read๐Ÿ˜‡

What do you think?
Which would you have at lease thrice a week?

  2. I prefer smoothie to juice because smoothie tends to make one fuller, unlike juice.
    Fibre aids bowel movement.

  3. Great presentation. I think juicing is the way to go but one still needs some advice as to the right combination of fruits for best nutritional results.

    1. thank you so much! For juicing, the 80:20 ratio is strongly recommended. 80% veggies, 20% fruits.

  5. Erhm! First of all, very educative and fun read.

I think smoothies are aesthetically pleasing what with how the colors change when you add colorful fruits like beetroot, berries, etc.

Me and juice have not exactly been friends.

But I guess I'll do both. No favorites please๐Ÿ˜Š

  9. So basically, (in a way sha) Blending is more of quantity? And juicing is more of “QUALITY”… even though they both have their advantages. Got that! This was very interesting!
