DIET ET CANCER (PART 1)

Hello amazing one! I want to believe that you know your're amazing. I hope you are doing fine today? I'm fine too, thank you😊

Our topic today is Diet et Cancer (Diet and Cancer). Relaxxx, I know the term "Cancer" can be scary sometimes, but just chill, Cancer is very avoidable. You can see that buff Broccoli doing some damage. Good nutrition has got you completely covered.

I know this topic might be upsetting for you for one reason or the other and I am sorry. I send love and light your way💓. In this post, we are only going to cover the first part of the topic and before you say Jack Robinson you will see the second part😉

Let's get straight to it!

DID YOU KNOW that Cancer figures are among the leading causes of death worldwide, accounting for 8.2 million deaths in 2012? (WHO 2014)

  • LUNG (1.59M deaths)
  • LIVER (745, 000)
  • STOMACH (723, 000)
  • COLO-RECTAL (694, 000)
  • BREAST (521, 000)
  • ESOPHAGEAL (400, 000)
To think that these are not just numbers, but LIVES. Cancer can and should be defeated.

  WHAT CAUSES CANCER?
Basically, Cancer is a collective term for a large group of diseases that can affect any part of the body.
  • Metastasis can occur. Metastasis is the expeditious formation of abnormal cells that grow beyond their usual boundaries, which can then permeate adjoining parts of the body.
  • The alteration of a normal cell to a tumor cell is a multiple process.
  • Cancer arises from one cell by a physical carcinogen like Ultraviolet light; by chemical carcinogens like tobacco smoke; even by biological carcinogens like infection. Aging is another factor for cancer development. Relax, I say again that it is 100% preventable.
Around 30% of cancer deaths are as a result of these top five behavioral & dietary risks; high body mass index (B.M.I), low fruit and vegetable consumption, lack of physical activity, tobacco use and excessive alcohol use.

Many cancers are treatable if detected at an early stage, hence it is important to be aware of early signs and to go for screening.
Don't you just love these colors?

  FRUITS, VEGGIES AND CANCER
As we know, Fruits and vegetables help to drastically reduce the risk of cancer. Let's see these examples.
  • Carotenoids, the wonderful antioxidants do a great job here. When you eat foods that contain high amounts  Iron and Copper, or when you use that your copper pan very regularly, these metals get oxidized in the body and cause free radicals (molecules that swim around in the bloodstream, get into the brain, cause sparks and send connection between cells). This explanation is actually a common experience for people with Alzheimer's.  You see how oxidation happens, now, Carotenoids are anti-oxidants. I don't know about you but I think it's amazing. Carrots, Spinach, Sweet Potato, Kale, Collards, Pumpkins are examples of Carotenoids. Selenium and Flavonoids are also antioxidants and they have anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Folate plays a vital role in DNA repair. Okra, Beets, Bell peppers, Avocado, Papaya and Oranges are rich in folate.
  • Vitamins C and E are antioxidants, they protect DNA from damage and stimulate the immune system.
  •  Fibrous fruits help to reduce the risk of bowel cancer. Examples include apples(eaten with the back), bananas, strawberries, mangoes, oranges etc.

RED MEAT AND CANCER
Fresh, frozen beef, pork, lamb, processed ham, bacon, salami, sausage are examples of red meat.
¼ of bowel cancer in men and ⅙ in women are linked to high consumption of red/ processed meat. Bowel cancer cases rise by >25% for every 120g of red meat eaten per day.

In the bowel, Nitrites which are naturally inert are converted to N-nitroso compounds which could cause cancer and this is because haem (a form of Iron that constitutes about half of the iron found in red meat)  stimulates the production of N-nitroso compound.
Cooking meat at high temperature or incompletely burning meat produces organic chemicals which form poly-cyclic hydrocarbons which may be carcinogenic. An example is broiling or barbecuing meat or other foods. This process deals with intense and direct heat . When fat from meat drops in the hot fire, it causes flames and the flame contains  these hydrocarbons that stick to food.

Alright!Let's draw the curtain here. I really hope you enjoyed reading this. Your enjoyment is my delight. As usual, let's connect in the comment section. I appreciate you for hanging with me. See you at the second part😘
